A designer emailed recently to ask: What are some good direct-to-consumer sofa companies?
First, some pointers when sofa shopping: Look for frames that are 100 percent hardwood (ideally kiln dried) and (it goes without saying) assembled with corner blocks, wooden dowels, metal screws, or brackets instead of flimsier staples or glue. And if you’re shopping online, a no-fuss return policy doesn’t hurt.
Here, our three sources for well-reviewed, affordable sofas (all made in the US):
1. Floyd
Above: We’ve been Floyd fans since its inception over a decade ago in Detroit. The company makes simplified pieces designed to grow with their owners and lives by guiding principles like: “Nothing unnecessary”, “design for the many”, and “design for longevity.” Shown is the new Sink-Down Sectional (from $2,061.50).
2. Maiden Home
Above: Maiden Home gets good reviews for sturdiness and comfort, with pieces designed in New York and built in North Carolina. Shown is their much-seen Dune Sofa (from $2,725), equal parts solid (kiln-dried hardwood frame, heavy-guage steel springs) and easygoing (down fill and a removable, machine-washable cover).
3. Sabai
Above: Sabai is a made-to-order sofa company that vows “no greenwashing”; their pieces are made of nontoxic and recycled materials in ethically run factories in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Michigan. Wrote one customer on Reddit, nine months in: “My couch is holding up great! I’ve had two dogs (one chihuahua and one lab) sleep and play on it, and the fabric is holding up well with no tears…. The couch is also surprisingly roomy and comfortable for guests for to sleep on.” Sabai also has a “Repair, Don’t Replace” program to minimize waste. Shown is their Evergreen Sofa (from $2,395).
